Applied smouldering for co-waste management: Benefits and trade-offs

نویسندگان

چکیده

Smouldering combustion is emerging as a valuable application for many environmentally beneficial purposes, including waste-to-energy. While applied smouldering systems rely on small fractions of fuel mixed within inert porous media (IPM) like coarse grain silica sand, there also an opportunity to pursue co-waste management with much higher loadings. This study explores these by blending non-smoulderable wastes (e.g., sewage sludge) smoulderable construction waste woodchips) form solid fuels (PSFs). Key differences between IPM and PSF were identified contrasting the temperature profiles in space time, specific mass loss rates, emissions across experiments multiple reactors (with 0.054, 0.080, 0.300 m radii). For example, exhibited throughputs, more straightforward path towards continuous operation, improved scalability, production potentially useful by-products CH4, H2) than systems. However, sensitive extinction lower moisture content limitations Altogether, this illuminates benefits trade-offs smouldering.

Co-benefits and trade-offs between biodiversity, carbon storage and water flow regulation

The trade-offs between biodiversity, carbon storage and water flow regulation were analysed in a biosphere reserve area. With the aim of proposing criteria for conservation plans that would include ecosystem services and biodiversity, a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based approach was designed to estimate and map the value of the biodiversity and ecosystem services. The actual protected a...

Trade-offs in cervical cancer prevention: balancing benefits and risks.

BACKGROUND New screening and vaccination technologies will provide women with more options for cervical cancer prevention. Because the risk of cervical cancer diminishes with effective routine screening, women may wish to consider additional attributes, such as the likelihood of false-positive results and diagnostic procedures for mild abnormalities likely to resolve without intervention in the...

Balancing IT Security Management Model Trade-Offs

IT security professionals' effectiveness in an organization is influenced not only by how usable their security management tools are but also by how well the organization's security management model (SMM) fits. Finding the right SMM is critical but can be challenging — trade-offs are inherent to each approach but their implications aren't always clear. The authors present a case study of one ac...
